As of September 1, 2010, I am a repatriated Canada. It was exactly 10 years ago that I left Denman Island, BC for the cornfields of Illinois. I am now back in Canada, by the waters of Chester, NS and am beginning a new academic position. My Canada Research Chair at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS will allow me to return to doing the research that I enjoy!
Several months ago, I held a conversation with my niece, who is attending a near-by university. She was contacted by an individual in the President’s Office at her home university who asked if she was related to me (I graduated with a degree from the university that she is now attending and we have a similar last name not common in the Atlantic provinces). This question prompted her asking exactly what it was that I did. She knew I was a professor but she never really understood what it was that I did as research.
So, this blog is a nod to my niece, and to my family and friends who have supported me over the years in many ways while not really understanding what it is that I do. I am a firm believer in open access and am hoping this blog will serve as a site where I can post thoughts and concerns and issues and writings for all of the world to read (well, okay, maybe just my closest friends and family). By making it public forces me to be able to explain more clearly all that is in my head.
